Broken Politics

Last week, some of the Unites States most conservative delegates joined up in Cleveland for the Republican National Convention. False narratives, race baiting and fear mongering where the rule of the week and everyone who spoke during the extravaganza made sure they were on the same accord.

First off, I have to say that Cleveland was a strange backdrop for this event. Ohio itself has been a swing state during presidential elections for sometime now, but the city of Cleveland is 53% African American. With Trump as the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States, a city which houses so many black people was an odd choice given his lack of support from the black community across the country. Also, the city is 10% Latino, and we know the type of wild shit he’s said about them. Furthermore, given how Trump represents big business, how was it logical to hold a week long party in a city that big business has decimated ? Cleveland has been a card carrying member of what’s known as the rust belt, a region of the United States who suffered great economic decline and population loss due to the destruction of it’s industrial sector.

Let’s be real for a second. We know that Ohio is pretty rural for the most part. Sure there’s cities like the aforementioned Cleveland and even Cincinnati, but no one would dare call either of these places a metropolis. As a result, Trump may have locked up a significant amount of the crazy white vote and just in case you were wondering, the state of Ohio is 83 % white.

The week started off with a gratuitous amount of red meat to rabble rouse the Republican voting base. The RNC ushered out a who’s who of  political and hollywood “stars” such as the noisey and half dead Rudy Giuliani, and the long forgotten lead from Charles in Charge, Scott Baio a.k.a Chachi Arcola.

Then out of the dark skies came the Melania Trump fiasco, as if some sort of gift from the political gods.

Sure, her writers plagiarized portions of a Michelle Obama speech from nearly a decade ago, but because the Trump’s and the RNC were so bad at fumbling together tangible explanations for how such a thing could happen, the story railroaded everything that occured at the convention for two whole days. Sadly, I watched every night of last weeks fear fest. However, outside of being introduced to the family of life-sized Weasels named the Trumps and Ted Cruz getting booed off stage, I honestly couldn’t tell you anything that happened for those 48 hours after Mrs. Trump’s colossal fuck up.

That brings us to last Thursday night, which served as the finale for the convention and Trump’s official acceptance bid for Republican Party nominee. There he stood in all of his poorly-tanned glory, using his now famed scare tactics and spouting a litany of misinformation during a speech that ran well over an hour long. Giving literally no insight into any sort of political policy, Trump railed on everything and yet somehow nothing at all. He yelled for minutes about how violent crime is up; not true. He goes on about how there are more illegal immigrants and undocumented workers that ever before;  pure bullshit.

“We have put unprecedented resources at our border…Well, it turns out that the rate of illegal migration into the United States today is lower by two-thirds than it was when Ronald Reagan was president. We have far fewer undocumented workers crossing the border today than we did in the ’80s or the ’90s or when George Bush was president.” – President Barack Obama

Next up, you guessed it, the Benghazi scandal and Hillary Clinton’s emails.

“When a secretary of state illegally stores her emails on a private server, deletes 33,000 of them so the authorities can’t see her crime, puts our country at risk, lies about it in every different form and faces no consequence – I know that corruption has reached a level like never before.” Donald Trump

Again, false.

What we do know at this point is Clinton’s use of a private server for email storage was not illegal. What she did wasn’t established as a crime of any sort and the FBI Director James Comey declined to bring her up on charges after a thorough investigation.

That was his acceptance speech in a capsule. Obama sucks, Hillary sucks, fear for your lives, and grab your guns because the immigrants are coming. Oh yeah, and making America great again.

No facts and nothing on his foreign and domestic policy, but maybe I’m an ass for expecting to hear something like that from a nominee for the President of the United States. This reasonable enough line of thinking of why there is still a large fracture in the Republican party at the moment. Staunch opposers who are committed conservatives that say they’ll never vote for Donald Trump because he doesn’t truly represent their core values.

I’d like to think if anyone could have done something about Trump’s rise, it would have been the powers that be in the GOP. However, a year of not taking the Donald seriously allowed him to slither his way to this very point in history. So who really knows if the “Never Trump” contengency will really put their vote where their mouths are come this November.

Oh, but the fun isn’t over yet.

This week the Democratic National Convention is being held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It’s the place where Hillary Clinton will accept her bid for Democratic Party nominee as the first female President of this country. The question is how does the DNC plan to differ from their counterparts convention held last week ? Do they have an advantage after seeing how the RNC turned out ?

Well, so far not so much.

Just this morning, Democratic National Commitee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz was booed off stage while addressing delegates from her home state of Florida. Detractors held signs and screamed shame at her because of recent findings in a massive leak of emails showing DNC staff members favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders during the parties primary election earlier this year. It also hints at a possible sabotage of Bernie’s race. Although she is scheduled to speak again tonight and was primed to be one of the most visible people in her party this week, she might get that call from Obama telling her to lay low after this morning’s madness. She has said however that due to the brewing scandal, she will be stepping down as Chairwoman of the DNC after the presidential election.

Nothing like starting off things on the right note.
