For all you fellow emotional football fans, ex Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has signed to play an over-35 Sunday league with Wychall Wanderers. The often revered Bulgarian international had his professional career dramatically cut short due to his diagnosis of leukemia. Tough as nails, Stiliyan is back on the pitch, seemingly delighted to play the game once more.
*Wipes hypothetical tear* You see that, my friends, is what the beautiful game is all about.
Petrov told local news outlet Birmingham Mail:
“It’s a good laugh and they’re competitive games. It’s just really nice to be out there playing a proper game. I’ve played 90 minutes total and my fitness is improving but I need to be patient. As far as my position goes, you have to go where you’re needed! Sometimes only 12 players are there!”
Optimistic and selfless as always. Good for you, man.
