What Does it Mean to be “Pretty” Around the World?

Would I be considered pretty in France? What about in Brazil or Ghana?  Of course there’s no easy answer, because what is defined as beauty is truly subjective and often seen through the lens of cultural programming. Intrigued by these diverse perspectives,  un’ruly – an online platform dedicated to Black hair -has ventured out to showcase just how much beauty standards vary around the world with a new docu-series titled “Pretty”.

As each episode explores the influences of race and culture, it will also share the perspectives of Black women in each city to reveal just how subjective beauty can be.

Each month the series will touch down in a new city where viewers will get to know the stories of a few local women, each with their own distinct background and style. “Pretty” starts out in Europe, then will cover cities in Africa, South America, and finally North America.

Check out the debut episode of “Pretty” below and get a glimpse at beauty ideals in Paris.
